How Great Thou Art
You have probably never seen “How Great Thou Art” performed
like this.
From Wikipedia:
“"How Great Thou Art" is a
Christian hymn based on a Swedish
poem written by Carl Gustav
Boberg (1859–1940) in Sweden in 1885. The melody is a Swedish folk
song. It was translated into English by British missionary Stuart K. Hine, who
also added two original verses of his own composition. It was popularized by George Beverly Shea
and Cliff Barrows
during the Billy Graham
crusades.[1]
It was voted the United Kingdom's
favourite hymn by BBC's
Songs of Praise.[2] "How Great Thou Art" was
ranked second (after "Amazing Grace")
on a list of the favorite hymns of all time in a survey by Today's Christian
magazine in 2001.”

Recent Comments by Pope Francis
For full disclosure: this blog is written from a Protestant,
Trinitarian, Evangelical, and biblically orthodox position.
****************************************************************
Francis has said that the church has become too focused on
homosexuality, abortion, and issues of religious faith and doubt. What I hope that Francis is trying to
say is that the church cannot and should not be defined by what it is
against. That is a sure way for
the church to wither and die.
Marisol Bello and Eric J. Lyman in a USA Today article on
the issue say that Francis is reminding the world of the “Catholic Church as a
place of healing and mercy, not judgment and finger-pointing.” Others are concerned that Francis is
de-emphasizing adherence to traditional doctrine in favor of being “relevant.”
In the interview, Francis adds: “we
have to talk about them in a context. The teaching of the church, for that
matter, is clear and I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to talk
about these issues all the time."
Francis is not changing Catholic Church doctrine but appears to be trying
to say that the church cannot be only “against,” it must also be “for.”

Book Comment: An Encyclopedia of African American Christian Heritage
Many people would rather stick a pencil into their eye than
to read a book of history. That
really is a shame, because history helps us to understand where we have been
and how that affects where and who we are now. Christians, especially, are a historically based
people. To really understand
Christianity, it is necessary to learn about the mindset and history of a world
almost totally alien to our modern world but on which our modern world is
based.
All Christians worldwide are part of the same family. All those who belong to Jesus, have the
Mind of Christ. Yet, often, we
misunderstand one another. How
much does a Christian in Norway know about Christians in China? How much does a Christian in Belarus
know about Christians in Greece?
Do you know about the military saints or the Fools for Christ? How much do we know about Christians in
other religious traditions existing side by side with us in our own home areas?
In the United States, how much do white Christians know
about black Christians and vice versa?
We have lived together for four hundred years but many whites have never
been into a black church and many blacks have never been into a white church. Study of books such as An Encyclopedia
of African American Christian Heritage (Judson Press, 2002) can help us understand
one another.
The book by Marvin A. McMickle is divided into chapters of
short essays on the following subjects: Denominational Founders and Leaders,
Preachers, Teachers and Scholars, Politicians, Prophets, Nationalists, Cult
Leaders, Singers and Songwriters, and Movements, Terms, and Events. Good historical studies do not turn
away from discussing the unpleasant along with the positive and this book
exposes the warts along with the beauty. I heartily recommend this interesting and useful book.

A general caution: books may give you wonderful new
insights and explanations of subjects, but you should never base your Christian
beliefs on any one book or the teachings of one person, no matter who they are.
All teachings must be consistent with scripture. Read as the Bereans did, with
discernment. “… for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the
Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” Acts
17:11 NASB
Any doctrines must be consistent with the historical
full body of Christian thought. Doctrines or teachings inconsistent with
scripture in any way must be rejected. You would not eat cheese which had a
fuzzy fungus growing on it.

“…. I’d like to think there is a heaven.”
Billy Crystal (b. 1948) is an American comedian, actor,
writer, producer, and film director.
He has hosted the Academy Awards nine times and has appeared in numerous
classic comedic films. He recently
released a memoir, Still Foolin’ ‘Em: Where I’ve Been, Where I’m Going, and
Where the Hell Are My keys?
In a recent USA Today interview he mentions his love for his
wife of forty-three years. “… we
laugh a lot. Janice has always made me laugh. … I can’t bear to think of life without her. I want to go first because I don’t want
to miss her. I’d like to think
there is a heaven, and it will start from the happiest day in your life. I’ll be 18, and Janice Goldfinger will
walk by me in a bikini, and I will follow her, and it will start all over
again.”
“…. I’d like to
think there is a heaven.” How sad
it is that he does not know.

Update on the Murder of a Birmingham Pastor's Wife
Karen Shahan, the wife of Richard Shahan, Associate Pastor
at the First Baptist Church of Birmingham (Alabama, USA) was found murdered on
23 July 2013 in her home.
There have been almost no updates forthcoming from the
police. The husband, Richard, voluntarily
went to the police station to answer questions and was held there for two days
for what the police called “investigative purposes.” Pastor Shahan was released with no charges being filed and
without being officially named as a suspect in the killing. The church has place him on
administrative leave “to give him time and space to focus on his family and
healing at this time.”
