The Wise Men

Most modern Christmas nativity scenes depict the baby Jesus and his parents in the manger surrounded by barn animals, shepherds, angels, and Three Kings bearing expensive gifts. The problem is that this is not supported by the Bible.

The shepherds were told by a choir of angels to visit the Βρέφος (baby, infant, unborn, newborn) Jesus in a φάτνῃ (a manger, crib, animal feeding trough). This happened probably on or near the night of the birth. Luke 2: 8-20.

The magi Μάγος (wise man, magician, sorcerer, seer, teacher, sage, priest, astrologer; these men were probably Persians because they were from the East), who are not numbered and are not called kings, visited the Παιδίον (young child) in an Οικιαν (house). They were warned by an angel not to return to King Herod and went home by a different route. Enraged, Herod ordered the massacre of all boys in the Bethlehem region who were two years old and under kατὰ τὸν χρόνον ὃν ἠκρίβωσεν παρὰ τῶν μάγων (according to the time frame he had learned from the magi). Because of Herod’s response, the visit may have been as late as two years after the birth. Matthew 2:1-18.

There are many later additions to the Christmas story and tradition. Let the Bible speak for itself and listen to it.

They Know What You Are Saying!

I was walking my dog when a neighbor came by with her two young boys on a walk.  The two year old was driving his tricycle.  The other boy has just turned one year old.  The mother was pushing him in a little car.  The youngest boy waved at me and then turned to his mother and bumped his hands together. He was telling his mother that he wanted "more," presumably more of his "car ride."  The sign can be seen in the fourth link listed below.

The mother told me that the youngest boy knew several signs for simple things like "more," "finished," "hungry," "sleepy," "love," and "play." I had heard of this before and told her what that meant. The child, in correctly using the sign language, was demonstrating that he understood.  This also meant that he understood what his parents were saying and that he was listening.  I told her what she already knew; that children understand and are able to communicate long before they are able to speak.

Many people talk, and even argue, in front of "the baby," never realizing that the baby is listening.  How wonderful it is if what the baby hears is talk of Jesus and what the baby sees is two righteous and loving parents.

The baby sign language is inspired by the American Sign Language for the Deaf.

Ethical Complicity

It should be emphatically pointed out to those who use illegal mind-altering substances that they are ethically complicit in all the crimes committed to get these drugs into their possession: smuggling, beatings, theft, extortion, bribery, and murder. And those who binge drink need to be constantly reminded of the horrible results of binge drinking: cirrhosis, fetal injury or death, domestic violence, broken family relationships, body-mangling automobile accidents and other emotional, financial, physical, and spiritual carnage.
