What They Think of Us: The Success of United States Soccer Goalie Tim Howard Spawns Jesus Jokes

Tim Tebow found out what happens when a celebrity is open about their faith.

United States Soccer goalie Tim Howard gave the world a brilliant performance versus Belgium in the World Cup round of 16, making a record sixteen saves on some point-blank close-in shots. He has openly declared his allegiance to Jesus and has dedicated his play to Jesus’ glory. Soon afterwards, people began calling him “Bald Jesus” for his numerous saves.  Then the jokes started appearing.

Listen For Your Assignment

For 1143 consecutive posts to this blog, I have never “drawn a blank,” Never had writer’s block, never been at a loss for words.  This is not because I am somehow holier than anyone else, or because I am a more talented writer than others.  It is not because I am a bubbling, spewing volcano of ideas.  And it is not because I am some sort of brilliant intellectual.

We all have talents and skills, even those of us who feel as if we know how to do nothing.   Paul reminded us of this.  We are all important to the functioning of the Church (the ἐκκλησία) which is the Body of Christ.  Ephesians 1:22-23, 1 Corinthians 12:13, Romans 12:6-8.

Some of us are hands, some of us are feet.  As silly as it may sound, some of us may be hair, or eyes, or toenails, or … tonsils.  Every part of the body,  many of which are rarely if ever noticed,  is needed for the body to function at peak efficiency,

The Apostle Paul used his brilliant intellectual powers and his extensive knowledge of Jewish and gentile law and culture to work as an evangelist and theologian.

Tim Tebow, a professional athlete whose talent level and athletic fundamentals are often questioned, often wins because he tries harder than anyone else.  When he does win, he uses the occasion to glorify Jesus.

Brother Lawrence served God by performing kitchen duties and repairing shoes.  The very few pages of text which he wrote have inspired  millions.  During his lifetime, pilgrims came from around the world to meet the simple cook.

The gentle people at the Christian Animal Rescue Foundation  protect and comfort God’s creatures, expressing God’s love through kindness to animals.

Mother Angelica turned a small convent of nuns in Irondale, Alabama (USA) into an international satellite broadcasting giant .

Michael Jr. tells jokes and humorous stories.

There are multitudes of people serving the Lord in ways not always recognized as ministry.  These people are not always the most talented or the most capable.   What all of these people have done is to listen.  The Holy Spirit can use whatever you have, whatever you are, whatever you can do.  All you have to do is make yourselfg available and listen.  Some people say “everything is politics,” or that “everything reduces down to money.”  For the Christian, everything is Jesus.

The purposes of the Lord will be accomplished.  What a sad thing it is if you do not listen and cooperate with Him for He will call upon someone else and you will miss out on the honor and privilege which was intended for you.

Tim Tebow

(Some videos will not play properly when you click on the triangle.  Instead,  click on the title line in the picture and the video will begin .  When the video is completed, close the You Tube pop-up window to return to this blog.)

Tim Tebow (Timothy Richard Tebow) was born in the Philippines in 1987 to Baptist missionary parents. He has been the “star” on the football field since he was a boy; through high school, college, and a budding professional career.  Unlike so many “stars,” Tim Tebow’s main point of conversation is not himself.  Every conversation with Tim Tebow becomes a conversation about Jesus!  Not everyone is happy about that.

Here is a video of Tim Tebow in action. He is number 15 in blue.

In this video, he is number 15 in white, running as well as a professional running back.

Against the Dallas Cowboys.

Here is blasphemous “comedic” skit  on the American television program, Saturday Night Live, poking fun at the fact that Tebow’s team, the Denver Broncos, has been winning games even though his own personal game statistics are not particularly impressive overall.  The skit is saying he must have had “help.”

Tebow has never said his team is winning because of his faith. What he has said is that he plays hard and to the best of his ability at all times because he dedicates what he does on the field to the Lord. He does what he does for the glory of Jesus.

What They Think of Us: Jake Plummer on Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow, a professional quarterback (American style football) is an outspoken Christian who talks about Jesus any time anyone sticks a microphone in his face.  Jake Plummer, a former professional player, had this to say, "I wish he'd just shut up after a game and go hug his teammates."  Tebow responded .

The Glory for Christ Football League

Tim Tebow is the most well known home-schooled football player. He grew up in Florida which is one of the twenty-four US states to allow home schooled kids to play with public or private school teams. Georgia is one state which does not.

The eight team Glory for Christ Football League is made up of homeschoolers and students from small private Christian academies which don't have teams of their own. One coach has told his team to "block as if you're blocking for God," which of course, they are. Any activity performed for the glory of God is holy. We often forget that.

Football can be holy. Being a lawyer can be holy. Acting can be holy. Brother Lawrence, a 17th century lay Carmelite brother, in his book, The Practice of the Presence of God, showed that even cooking, cleaning pots and pans, and repairing shoes can be holy.
