Little Things Done for God

"There are many of us that are willing to do great things for the Lord, but few are willing to do little things." Dwight L. Moody (1837-1899)

I have said before that I don't think God cares about our results; any results of our Spirit-led actions belong to God.  What He wants from us is our obedience.  We may never even know the results of our actions and we really don't know which actions God considers to be "great" and which He considers to be "little."

"But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching." Mark 6:4-6.  Jesus did not consider a few miraculous healings to be a great work.

Zoei Toh Religious Affilation

In response to a question by one of this blog's readers; Zoei Toh is a Seventh-day Adventist. (On the link, see the sixth bullet point.)

The largest Adventist group is the Seventh-day Adventist Church of which Zoei Toh is a member.  "Seventh-day" refers to their practice of meeting on Saturday, the Sabbath, rather than on Sunday. The Adventists are normally considered to be conservative Protestants who hold to some doctrines differing from those of other Protestants.  Two of their differing doctrines are: souls sleep after death until the Resurrection rather than immediately entering Paradise; the ultimate punishment for the wicked is annihilation rather than eternal torment.

Adventist denominations include the Seventh-day Adventist Church,  the Christadelphians, the Advent Christian Church, the Primitive Advent Christian Church, the Davidian Seventh-day Adventist Association,  the Branch Davidians, the Church of God (Seventh Day), the Church of God and Saints in Christ, the Church of God General Conference, the United Seventh-Day Brethren,  the Worldwide Church of God, the United Church of God, the True and Free Adventists, United Sabbath-Day Adventist Church, the Adventist Church of Promise, the Creation Seventh Day Adventist Church, the general Conference of the Church of God (Seventh Day), the Seventh Day Adventist reform Movement, the Church of the Great God, the Intercontinental Church of God, the Living Church of God, the Philadelphia Church of God, the True Jesus Church, the United Church of God, the United Seventh-day Brethren, the Advent Christian Church, the Church of God General Conference (Abrahamic Faith), the Church of the Blessed Hope, and Celestia.  The groups are not totally uniform in their theology, differing among themselves on certain points.

Book Comment: Life's Little Destruction Book

We've all seen little instruction books with trite, often quite simplistic "advice."  Life's Little Destruction Book, which clearly says on its cover that it is "A Parody," tells you how to be successfully insensitive and self-centered.  I laughed all the way through it.  I know people who appear to be following the instructions in this book to the letter and I also know that all of us have practiced at least a few of these activities from time to time.

Some of my favorites (making me laugh the hardest) include:
"Take the hotel towel."
"Leave the toilet seat up."
"Brag a lot."
"Notice good ideas and pass them off as your own."
"Let your nose hair grow out."
"Make scary faces at babies."
"Leave used dental floss on the bathroom sink."
"Give little kids clothes for their birthdays."

Veggie Tales

Your children will absolutely love the Veggie Tales.  The videos, and, yes, the accompanying merchandise, present moral themes based on Christianity.  The characters are computer generated anthropomorphic vegetables with names like Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber, Madame Blueberry, and Archibald Asparagus.  Sounds silly?  It is, intentionally.

There are many Silly Songs, like this; "I Love My Lips."

Others are clearly Christian.

Atbash

Interest in the possibility that secret codes (inserted by God) exist in the first five books of the Bible has inspired much discussion and numerous books.  The Bible Codes and possible humanly inserted acrostics have been discussed in this blog.

There is another Hebrew biblical convention known as Atbash (ATBS).  This is a simple monoalphabetic substitution cipher which was used to "hide in plain sight" secret messages intended only for those who knew the code.  The code consists of reversing the Hebrew alphabet.  The third letter from the beginning of the alphabet would be replaced by the third letter from the end of the alphabet, etc. An example from   Jeremiah 25:26 and 51:41 is the substitution of Sheshak (שֵׁשַׁךְ) for Babylon (בָבֶל).

Evangelism In France

France is a largely secular country but has a long and prominent place in the history of Christianity.  Roman Catholicism and Protestantism have both declined to shadows of their former selves. At the moment, the fastest growing religion in France is Islam. The European Christian Mission (ECM) aims to change this.

As the ECM website states, "God has not abandoned France."  In the last thirty-five years, over one thousand new evangelical churches have been planted, bringing the total to approximately twenty four hundred.  Many rural areas still have no evangelical church.

ECM has six missionary teams in France, mainly in the Loire Valley, Paris, and Marseilles.

Apologetics

"I apologize."  We often say this when we realize that we have committed an offense, hurt someone's feelings, or sometimes, we say it, more sorry for being caught than for what we did.  This is a modern usage but it has little to do with the ancient meaning of the word.  The connection is that both senses of the word carry the idea of offering a defense,

"Apology" comes from the Greek word απολογία, ("speaking in defense").  The root words are "logos" ("λόγος"; "word," "reason") and "apo" (απο) a prefix which carries the idea of "separation from" and "of the place where something originates."  So, apologetics means reasoning from the origins of an idea.  Aπολογία was a legal term. The prosecution delivered the kategoria (κατηγορία), and the defendant replied with an apologia (απολογία), a formal legal response to a charge.  The intent was to reply to and to refute the charges.  The modern discipline of Christian Apologetics comes from this background.  Other religions also have their apologists .

There are multitudes of books available in the field of Christian Apologetics.  Two of my personal favorites are Mere Christianity, by C.S. Lewis, and Simply Christian. Why Christianity Makes Sense, by N.T. Wright.  Both men exhibit intellects of the first order. Bishop Wright comes across like a beloved pastor, or like your grandfather.  Lewis was an academic (he occupied the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University) and he might have come across to others as a little bit cranky.  Personally, I think he's hilarious with his ultra-dry British humor.  I'll talk about both of these books at a later time.

A modern apologetics group, The Fixed Point Foundation, attempted to place an advertisement during the recent National Football League Super Bowl but were rejected because the advertisement was "offensive."  This is just the sort of charge which Christian Apologetics attempts to refute.

Christians

At some time during their lives, the following people have publicly identified themselves as Christian.   Inclusion in this list does not indicate approval or disapproval of the person, of their orthodoxy or lack of it, or of their actions.  Readers are encouraged to suggest persons who should be included on this list.  This is a recurring segment in this blog.

Andrew Stanton: (b. 1965, Massachusetts, USA) Film director, screenwriter, producer, voice actor. Two Academy Awards (Best Animated Feature) for Finding Nemo and Wall-E.

Vladislaus III Dracul: (b. 1431, Wallachia (Romania) – d. 1477; aka: Vlad Dracula; Vlad the Impaler; Vlad Tepes) Prince of the Romanian principality of Wallachia.  The family crest was a dragon hanging down from a cross.  In Latin “draco” means dragon, in Romanian it means “devil.”  Romanians and others in the region remember him as a Christian prince who repelled the Ottoman advance into Romania.  He was praised for this by Pope Pius II, who also criticized his methods.
When Ottoman envoys refused to remove their caps in his presence, he had their caps nailed to their heads and sent them back to their Sultan, Mehmet  II.  When mehmet II lead his forces to the outskirts of Tirgoviste, he saw “the Forest of the Impaled,” 20,000 Turkish prisoners impaled through their bodies on sharp poles sticking up out of the ground.  He signed his name as “Drakula” or “Drakulya.” To much of the world ,he is considered to have been brutal and sadistic and he is the real-life inspiration for the fictional vampire character, Count Dracula.  Roman Catholic.

Y-Ben Hok: In 2008, Y-Ben Hok, the pastor of a 132 member Ede tribe Christian congregation, was arrested in Vietnam and died in police custody.  The official report was that he committed suicide.

Johann von Staupnitz (b. ca. 1469, Saxony – d. 1524)  He was the vicar general of the Augustinian Order in Germany and a personal friend of the monk, Martin Luther.  He never became a Protestant and complained of the uproar the movement caused within the Roman Catholic Church.

Kim Shin-Jo: In 1968, North Korean Kim Shin-Jo was a member of a thirty-one person assassination squad sent into South Korea to kill President Park Chung-Hee.  Kim was the only one of the assassins to survive the attack.  North Korea executed his parents after he became a South Korean citizen in 1970 and converted to Christianity.  He eventually became the pastor at Sungrak Sambong Church in Gyeongg- do.

Super Bowl Advertisement Rejected for "Religious Content"

Watch this You Tube clip.  An Alabama based group,  Fixed-Point,org, attempted to place this as a national advertisement during the recent broadcast of Super Bowl XLV.  They intend to try again to place the advertisement in 2012. As it now stands, they may have to to as they did this year and place the piece with local television stations.  This year the ad appeared in Alabama and Washington, DC.

The advertisement is not asking you to buy anything or to send any money to the organization.  The Fox Television Network rejected the advertisement as "offensive" because of its "religious content."  Obviously, the network feared that non-Christians might take offense at the simple, non-threatening presentation. We truly live in a wimpy, whiney world!

In truth, this borders on censorship of thought and free expression.  Sexual innuendos and vulgarities are permissible in television broadcasts, but anything of a religious nature is rejected.  The attitude is that religion is outdated, old-fashioned, divisive, offensive, closed-minded, and any number of other negative stereotypes.

By rejecting this advertisement, Fox placed it among a list of other advertisements which have been rejected, some very deservingly.

Below is a message from Fixed-Point,org, filmed at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

Antarctica is Also Our Home

The population of Antarctica, one of the harshest environments on Earth, is about 5000 during the "summer," and falls to around 1000 really tough people during the winter.  Around 72% of the people are Christian, 24% are non-religious, 3% are Muslims, 1% are Hindus, and 1% are Buddhists.  The percentages fluctuate slightly as the seasons change.

The Christian traditions represented among the population include non-denominational,  Russian Orthodox,  Roman Catholic, and Bulgarian Orthodox.  One of the churches, at Belgrano II Base, is made entirely of ice!

Film Comment: Fireproof

A man who is willing to run into a burning building to save strangers is allowing his own marriage to go up in flames and burn to the ground.  He's an accomplished fire captain, respected by everyone, but his personal life is in total disarray.

Him: I work hard and do what is right. At home I just want to relax.  All she does is nag.  She doesn't respect me.  I look at internet pornography because she always says no.
Her: He doesn't care how I feel.   He doesn't understand my emotional needs.  He just married me for sex and cooking.

The man is challenged to try an experiment, to follow a daily plan based on biblical concepts.  To his surprise, and to the delight of his initially suspicious wife, their marriage is saved.  They learn how to make their marriage fireproof.

Fireproof  (2008) is an anomaly, an independent film produced by a local church in Albany, Georgia rather than a large Hollywood studio.  There are only two professional actors in the film; the rest of the cast, who are remarkably competent for non-professionals, are all members of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia.

Two other films, Flywheel, and Facing the Giants, were also produced by the same group.  Of the three, Flywheel is my personal favorite.
