Flattop Jones

Flattop Jones Sr. is a fictional character created by cartoonist Chester Gould for his Dick Tracy  detective newspaper comic strip.  Jones was a vicious contract killer loosely based on the American bank robber Charles Arthur “Pretty Boy” Floyd (1904-1934).  Flattop was drawn with a deformed skull which was completely flat on top.   Obviously, Jones was an exaggerated caricature of evil;  he just looks evil and he would kill you without a thought if someone paid him to do so.

One problem with evil is that often it does not look “evil.” Many times it is attractive, seductive, pleasant,  lucrative, even … beautiful.  2 Corinthians 11:14 says that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. A “light angel” γγελον φωτός.

Film Comment: Be Human

Betty Boop is a cartoon character created by the near-legendary animation pioneer, Max Fleischer (1883-1972) who brought numerous well known characters to the screen (Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, Grampy, Popeye, and Superman). Betty is often incorrectly said to have been based on the "It" girl, Clara Bow but she was actually based on the singer, dancer, and television and film actress Helen Kane.  The Fleischer Betty Boop cartoons were voiced by actress Mae Questel (who portrayed Betty, Olive Oyl, Aunt Bluebell, the Sea Hag, Swee'Pea, Little Lulu, Little Audrey, Casper the Friendly Ghost, and the hilariously senile "Aunt Bethany " in the comedic film Christmas Vacation.)

Most of the Betty Boop cartoons are acceptable for children to view, but a few were actually banned.  Betty was recognized by adults almost immediately as a sexual character and a few of her cartoons have elements which are seen as objectionable today.  Be Human (1936) is such a cartoon.  Once you see it you will know why children must not see it.

In response to severe animal cruelty by an ill-tempered farmer , Betty and Grampy decide to take matters into their own hands and inflict severe cruelty on the farmer. in a sort of "eye for an eye" justice.  While torturing the man, they laugh and obviously enjoy themselves.

Justice in the Bible means "setting things right."  God, whose motives are always pure, reserves to Himself the right to exact vengeance.

"To me belongeth vengeance and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste." Deuteronomy 32:35
"Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." Romans 12:19

The Bible is very clear that we must not mistreat animals and we also should not allow others to do so.  The desire to inflict physical pain or harm on abusers, though, and especially the desire to enjoy doing it,

is as evil as the animal abuse itself.

Stereotypical Misunderstandings of Christian Theology

This Tom and Jerry cartoon, "Heavenly Puss," from 1948, exhibits several popular cultural misunderstandings of Christian theology, particularly that one can earn their place in heaven and that heaven is up in the clouds.  See if you can spot the other faulty stereotypes.

Solomon and the Two Mothers

"Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.  And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it.  And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.  And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.   And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.   And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.   And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.   Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.   Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.   And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment." 1 Kings 3:16-28

"...the Devil will get you!"

Just north of Prattville, Alabama (USA) on Interstate Highway 65 is a roadside billboard on which there is painted a gleefully leering red-skinned devil with a pitchfork.  There he stands, with a long pointed tail and little horns on his head.  Just like the little devil who stood on Little Audrey’s left shoulder in the classic cartoons. (A little white-robed angel with a halo stood on her right shoulder.)

On the billboard, is the inscription in bright red, “Go to Church or the Devil will get you!”

I used to pass by this sign without any serious thought, but, this last weekend, it really bothered me.  I know that the people who put up the sign were well-meaning and devoted Christians and I share their concern.  The primary and overriding task of the Church is evangelism. (Matthew 28:19)

There are several things I see as troubling about the billboard.

1.                     The devil on the sign is cartoonish and stereotypical.  Non-believers will laugh at the supposedly “stupid” Christians rather than be frightened by the Devil whose existence they deny.
2.                     If we are serious about challenging the world’s evil system and wish to draw others to Christ, we must present arguments which are intellectually unchallengeable, not trite and stereotypical ones which will be dismissed as silly by unbelievers.
3.                     As presented, the message seems to state that
church attendance will save someone.  Then why does every honest pastor know that, among the people in their churches, some, perhaps many, are totally lost? “And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matthew 7:23 (The full passage is Matthew 7:15-28)
4.                     The billboard's message implies that an action, church attendance, is important in our salvation.  We are told not to forsake assembling ourselves together (Hebrews 10:25) but we are also told that observance of the law and assembling on a particular day will not save us; we are saved by our relationship with Jesus Christ.  (Galatians 2:16, Romans 14:4-8.)  There is nothing which we can do to save ourselves, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9

The person(s) who placed the devil billboard on the side of the highway had only the best intentions and, if only one person was moved by the billboard to accept Jesus as Lord, there was rejoicing in Heaven (Luke 15:10).  We must, however, be careful about the unintentional messages we are sending by our statements and actions to be sure that the received message is the biblical one we intended to send.

Veggie Tales

Your children will absolutely love the Veggie Tales.  The videos, and, yes, the accompanying merchandise, present moral themes based on Christianity.  The characters are computer generated anthropomorphic vegetables with names like Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber, Madame Blueberry, and Archibald Asparagus.  Sounds silly?  It is, intentionally.

There are many Silly Songs, like this; "I Love My Lips."

Others are clearly Christian.

Book Comment: The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb

You may never have heard of Robert Crumb (b. 1943, Philadelphia), but he is an internationally respected cartoonist closely associated with the underground counter-culture of the late twentieth century.  His pen or pencil is constantly moving and people have been known to follow him to grab left behind napkins, matchbook covers, and scraps of paper on which he has compulsively doodled.  His artwork sells for thousands of dollars.

Crumb has been described as a genius, a misogynist, a devoted and loving father, the founder of the underground comix movement, a misanthrope, a philanderer, a 78 RPM record collector, the creator of Fritz the Cat, a recluse, a talented musician, a counter culture icon, an illustrator capable of near-photographic portraits and highly stylized caricatures, an obsessive man, a man so famous that a documentary about his life and work has been made as a feature film, a compulsive man, a vulgar artist sometimes accused of producing pornography, a member of the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame (1991), and so on.  He is a very complex man.

Many were shocked, and some were highly offended, when R. Crumb decided to illustrate the Book of Genesis.   Crumb is known to not be religious in any traditional sense and, indeed, does have a history of producing images which could be interpreted as pornographic.

Crumb originally intended to do a "takeoff" of Adam and Eve but decided instead to do a literal verse by verse illustration of the entire book, as he says, "All 50 chapters." What resulted is a fascinating, massive, and controversial book illustrated in Crumb's distinctive highly detailed and intricate comic book style which I believe actually shows reverence for the book by not glossing over anything.  I mean that.  That is why the book is controversial.

Where people are naked in the Bible, they're naked in the book.  Where they have sex in the Bible, they have sex in the book.  Where there is killing, blood and guts abound.  The "begat lists" have a different face associated with each name.  The people are very plain, some are ugly, just like real people.  God is presented as a stern old man in flowing robes and with hair and beard hanging down to his feet.

Robert Crumb, in his introduction to the book says, "... I, ironically, do not believe the Bible is 'The Word of God."  I believe it is the words of men.  It is, nonetheless, a powerful text with layers of meaning that reach deep into our collective consciousness, our historical consciousness, if you will.  It seems indeed to be an inspired work..."

It may be that a man who is, at best, an agnostic, has shown more respect for a biblical text than those who squeamishly sanitize and euphemize the "hard parts." The sort of people who would be horrified to find out what "hand under thigh" (Genesis 24:2) means.

Friends

On his freelance cartooning website, Australian Baptist pastor Matt Glover features a cartoon in which a man wants to "friend" God but he can't because he hasn't been able to find Him on Facebook. His simple cartoon speaks to the shallow nature of modern pop culture. A "friend" can be someone you've never met and will never meet; you just share trivialities on an internet social network. Some people on the networks have thousands of "friends."
A true friend is much more than an acquaintance and much more than a "friendly" person. The truth is that a true friend is not just a friend; actually they love you. They are willing to inconvenience themselves for you and they are still your friend if you sometimes treat them badly.
It is not a coincidence that a famous gospel song is entitled "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." He endured the ultimate inconvenience for us even while we were still not His friends.
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
