Casein Protein Intolerance
Agalee Jacob, a Canadian dietitian and diabetes educator. says. " Lactose intolerance , which is an intolerance to the sugar found in milk, is one of the most common food intolerances, but an intolerance to casein can sometimes cause similar symptoms." Casein is a milk protein rather than a sugar. Milk to most people is a harmless and tasty food ingredient. To persons with a milk product intolerance it is basically a poison.
Intolerances to food products which most people can safely consume. can, in the intolerant individual almost instant bloating, cramping,. flatulence. and diarrhea.Sufferers acn experience either or both of these food intolerances.
It is possible to purchase lactose-free products which can be safely consumed by the lactose intolerant person but not all of these products are also casein-free. An example is a "dairy free" coffee creamer which contains "casein. a milk derivative."
In our lives as Christians, many things are tasty and pleasant but they can also sometimes cause discomfort or even intense pain. Sports.our occupations, literature. culinary adventures, travel, etc, can all be positive and fulfilling experiences. When they are allowed to become obsessions that interfere with our family and Christian duties. they can cause injury in our lives. Anything which distracts us enough to make us less useful to our families and to our Lord is damaging.
Oddly enough. some Christians unintentionally cause severe injury in their families their personal lives. and in their relationship with the Lord. when they become obsessive about "church work.
These are people who are unable to say "no" to any church related request. It is important to understand that God is not the one asking you to be involved in EVERY church project or activity. Often, when you try to do too much you end up accomplishing very little and you may cause emotional and spiritual injury to yourself and others along the way. How does it honor God for you to perform forty-five church projects at the cost of neglecting your husband and your children? Your emotional and spiritual burnout does not honor God. It makes you less useful to Him.
It is much better to choose two or three activities into which you feel especially led by the Lord and to do them excellently without neglecting yourself or your family.

Children's Easter Egg Hunt
Today is Easter! He is Risen!
This week, on our block, there was a children's Easter Egg Hunt party. The flier which was sent out to announce the party had, in large bold letters, "BYOB!" Then the anagram was explained: "Bring your own basket." Then, in parentheses: (Adults, bring your own bottle if you wish.)
Some Christians believe that the current observance of Easter in the West is totally pagan. What do bunny rabbits, baby chickens, and Easter Eggs have to do with the celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus from the dead? Others believe that the secular trappings of Easter are harmless and a fun time for children. Regardless of what you think about the current Western observance of Easter, why would adults feel that they must bring alcoholic beverages to every gathering? Even to a children's party?

Film Comment: Mom’s Night Out
The Erwin Brothers of Birmingham, Alabama (USA) have set a new standard for Christian films which too often in the past have been obviously low budget, preachy, and sadly, painfully amateurish in execution. The movement began with the Kendrick brothers of Georgia who recruited their church members to produce and act in surprisingly high quality films such as Fireproof, Courageous, Flywheel, and Facing the Giants.
I have said before that truly quality films are rarely about what they appear to be about on the surface. The Erwin Brother’s films are examples of this. October Baby can be seen as an anti-abortion film but the deeper meaning is about the redemptive power of forgiveness. Woodlawn is a football film which is not in any way about football. Football is merely the setting of this film which recounts events which seem impossible but which actually happened. The film depicts the personal, social, and racial reconciliation which can occur when the power of the Lord is unleashed.
Mom’s Night Out (2015) is another Erwin Brothers film but it is a departure from the others in that it is a comedy. A real comedy, A fall on the floor and laugh out loud comedy. And a totally Christian film. Just remember to forget subtlety.
The film is about a woman who is living her dream, She has a loving, loyal, and successful husband, a nice home, beautiful children, and attends an actively growing and supportive evangelical church. She is miserable.
She feels stressed from every direction and feels inadequate to handle her life. She often fells as if she is a failure, especially when she explodes like a volcano during her frequent emotional “moments.”
The plot of Mom's Night Out involves a stress-free night she plans with her friends, who are also secretly suffering from serious stress. The fathers will keep the children! The women invite the pastor’s wife whom they all admire because she always seems so able to remain calm in any situation.(An aside: the pastor’s wife is touched that the other women chose to include her in the event since no one has invited her to anything in five years.) Surprise! The simple event rapidly devolves into a worst night of your life scenario.
Without ruining anything for you if you choose to view this film, here are the take-aways:
2. Pastors and their families are just like everyone else. They are stressed too.
3. You cannot fix everything.
4. God does not take away all of our problems. He helps us find meaning in the problems and chaos.
5. Take the focus off of yourself and return it to God where it belongs. He is in control.
Psalms 46:10

The Purpose of Christianity
Dr, Atul Gawande is an internationally known surgeon and author working in Boston, Massachusetts. He writes books and articles about performance and the human quest to do and be “better.”
Dr. Gawande has said that, despite the best efforts of his parents, he is not a very good Hindu. He did, however, find the Hindu rituals meaningful when his father died and the family gathered in India to scatter his father’s ashes into the Ganges River which is sacred to Hindus. The rituals gave Dr. Gawande a sense of solidarity with his family and a feeling of continuity with his history; a sense of belonging to something bigger than himself.
I think that many Christians also see this as the purpose of religion. That, and also the civilizing effect that religion can have on their children. They totally miss the point!
Here is a list of some of the things which Christianity is NOT about: Making us feel good about ourselves. Connecting us with our families. Socializing our children. Making us into nice people. Creating social justice. Fighting abortion or sex slavery. Fighting poverty. Continuity with our traditions. And many more.
Christianity is about bringing glory to the Lord God. All the other good things, important as they are, come about because we wish to obey and glorify God.
"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows his handiwork." Psalm 19:1

Family Crosses
This last Sunday was Easter day. At the church which my son and his family attend, the families participated in a wonderful ceremony. The parents and their children built small crosses and wrapped them in burlap. Nails were placed in the cross at the points where the hands and feet of Jesus were positioned. The parents read a text explaining the meaning of the cross and the nails and said a family prayer.
Then the parents explained the Resurrection and the children and parents placed flowers and plant branches into the burlap to represent the beauty of life. The parents explained to the children that Jesus was really dead and then rose, defeating death forever.
Afterwards, the families carried the crosses home. There were as many different crosses as there were families. The crosses were all different. The crosses were all the same. The crosses were all beautiful. Just like us.

Film Comment: The Wild Dogs
There are several films carrying the title of The Wild Dogs. This is the 2002 film directed by Thom Fitzgerald in Bucharest (Bucuresti), Romania. The film won 4 awards in 2002 from the Atlantic Film Festival and 4 nominations from the Genie Awards and the Taos Talking Picture Festival. It is not of Oscar quality, but it definitely will make you think, and squirm.
Several stories are twined
together into a slice of several days in the life of the rich elite and the
poor beggars of Bucharest. It takes place during the period of the
"cull" of the wild dogs which basically overran the city after the
fall of the Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. The characters include, a
highly reluctant city-employed dogcatcher; a Canadian pornographer in town to
photograph fresh, very young meat; a cynical and corrupt diplomat and his
disillusioned lonely wife; bands of abandoned children; hideously deformed
"freaks of nature;" gypsies; beggars; and, of course, the dogs.
Unless you are a veteran viewer
of hard-edged films I really can't recommend that you watch this. Some of it
will make you angry, some of it will make you cry. Some of the language will
offend you. You will not believe that Dorutu (a human torso) and "Sour
Grapes" (whose knees bend backward as he walks around on all fours like a
large crab) are real people, but they are. There were no CGI special effects
involved in filming these characters.
The film causes extreme
disagreements among its viewers. Some hate it, some say it is an accurate
reflection of Bucharest. One Romanian emigrant said online, "Every country
they got their poors." Claudita_993, a Romanian who resettled in
Canada, said of the dogs, "I felt sorry for them and I despised them at
the same time."
The point of the film, from a
Christian perspective, is that the people in the film were the actual wild
dogs, aimless and hopeless, scrounging each day just to survive, living utterly
without purpose. There are no innocent people in the film, not even the children. The only
innocents are the dogs. It is a powerful presentation of the sheer lostness of
the world living without Jesus Christ.

Book Comment: Fruit Happens!
Michael Christopher’s book, Fruit Happens!, (2010) is a free
Christian young adult novel distributed by the 1687 Foundation. The short (only
112 pages) is the story of an old man named Dellie O’Shea who is reminiscing
about his boyhood adventures. He
is a retired stage singer and dancer who describes himself as “little person” since he is 37 inches
tall.
Dellie has adventures with a girl he probably loves. Her
name is Paisley Baker, but Dellie calls her “Cake.”. “I’d known for some time
that Cake Baker went to church every Sunday, but I hadn’t held it against her.”
This is a doctrinally sound book written in a conversational
style. The book is an easy read
for its intended age group of age 10 to 14 year old readers. The point of the
book is to explain the Fruits of the Spirit and how they develop in a believer.
The process of Sanctification is
explained. The novel does a very good job of that. I do have problems with this
book, however.
1.
All the children have the same “voice.” One of
the marks of good fiction is the establishment of clearly discernable
characters who “read” differently from one another. The children all speak like adults. In fact, they all speak
like the same adult, clearly the author.
2.
The book reads like a disguised sermon.
3.
The Bible study meetings develop along the lines
of an outline with each child adding just the insight that is needed at that
moment in the exposition.
4.
I do not think that any teenager who is not
already a Christian will read this book. It will hold no appeal for
non-Christians.
The book is a very clear in its explanation of several
doctrinal points:
1.
The fruits of the Spirit are not natural to us.
They develop within Christian believers because of the indwelling of the Holy
Spirit.
2.
The fruits of the Spirit build gradually, with
one leading to the next. God is conforming us to Christ. Sometimes we humans
lurch forward in starts and sputters. The problem lies with us, not God.
3.
There are suggestions and study questions
provided to aid the reader in expressing the fruits of the Spirit.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23

Book Comment: In the beginnning
“The very first story in the Bible tells us that God made
the world and everything in it. … our world did not simply begin by accident.”
In the beginning
(1984) is book number one in the Lion Story Bible (Lion Publishing plc,
Oxford, England), It is a paraphrase suitable for elementary school aged
children. The book emphasizes
God’s delight in the world which He created. The gentle text of the book feels like a prose poem.
Here is a sample from the beautiful illustrations by Tony
Morris.
Read this book to a child or, better yet, let those on a late second
grade or early third grade reading level read it for themselves.
“That’s good,” said God.

A general caution: books may give you wonderful new
insights and explanations of subjects, but you should never base your Christian
beliefs on any one book or the teachings of one person, no matter who they are.
All teachings must be consistent with scripture. Read as the Bereans did, with
discernment. “… for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the
Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” Acts
17:11 NASB
Any doctrines must be consistent with the historical
full body of Christian thought. Doctrines or teachings inconsistent with
scripture in any way must be rejected. You would not eat cheese which had a
fuzzy fungus growing on it.

Film Comment: Megan is Missing
One commenter on Netflix calls Megan is Missing, “Maybe the most
disturbing thing I have ever seen.”
Another says, “Everyone with young teen children should watch this and
take the warnings to heart.” Many
commenters just said, “Don’t watch this.”
At least one commenter makes the absolutely ludicrous claim that the film amounts to victim blaming. Some criticize the film saying that it is nothing more than "torture porn" and that it capitalizes on pedophilia and child abduction. The reason I think that it is not intended to be exploitive is the included video statement by Marc Klaas, whose young daughter Polly was abducted, raped, and murdered. Klaas seems to be a hardened, driven man. I do not believe that he would put his endorsement on a film which exploits the very thing against which he has battled for years.
A few Netflix commenters, who totally missed the point, said that the film is not a very good horror film. This is true and not true. As a "horror film," Megan is Missing is technically not up to current standards; the acting is substandard, the special effects are minimal, there is little actual plot, and the "horror" does not appear until the last twenty minutes. For caring, but naive, parents or for the clueless or careless teenager, this film can produce wide-eyed horror!
A warning: I would say that you should not watch this film. Once you have chosen to seen this film, you will be unable to “unsee” it; it will frighten, disgust, and militarize you. This film can be psychologically damaging to some people. Two sixteen year old viewers reported being "mentally scarred" by the film, but another said, "I wish more girls my age would watch this; maybe they wouldn't go missing." The film contains near constant profanity, teenage sexuality, teenage drug use, rape, physical abuse, pedophilia, abduction, murder, fetishism, gore, and other disturbing elements.
The film is about two girls. Fifteen year-old Megan is a sexually promiscuous drug-using party girl who maintains a close friendship with an unlikely partner, the sweet, naive, and innocent Amy, who is rejected by the other girls in town precisely because she is sweet, naive, and innocent. Megan's family life is terrible: her father is absent, her stepfather is in prison, and her mother's only parenting skill is to yell. Amy's parents are loving, sweet, affectionate, conventional parents who know absolutely nothing about her personal life. Both sets of parents are totally unaware of what is happening to their girls.
Megan has met an interesting young man on line (she has never actually seen him because his "webcam is broken"). She agrees to meet him behind the local diner. She goes alone and disappears.
Amy is sure that something bad has happened to Megan and is afraid that the young man whom Megan met online is involved. She contacts the young man online and during their argument, he insults and threatens her. She takes her fears to the police and then suddenly disappears.
The last twenty minutes of the film are so intense and horrible that they disturbed even some of the long-time horror gore-hounds who complained about this film.

There is no mention of Christianity or even of religion in this film. That does not mean that there is nothing that Christians can take from this movie.
1. Be aware of who your children's friends are.
2. Be aware of your children's cell phone and internet activities.
3. Try not to frighten your children but make sure that they are aware of the tactics used by sexual predators. As I have told my grandchildren, "Don't be afraid, just be smart."
Jesus said, "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of
wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves." Matthew 10:16 (KJV)
We are to be confident and wise and not do stupid things. We should teach our children also to be confident and wise and not to do stupid things.

A Bent and Deformed Tree
In one of the numerous cities strung along the Alabama Gulf Coast, trees line the main highway. This is a very intentional touch which reduces the "strip-mall" feel of the single story restaurants and stores which line the highway behind the trees. The trees stand up straight, all the same type, all the same height. This makes startling the one tree which grows straight out of an incline, parallel to the ground, and then turns upward. Someone failed to tend to this tree and it seems to have eventually turned upward of its own accord. It now points in the desired direction, but it is gnarled and deformed.
Realize that our children are like these trees. Raised and trained properly they will often stay within the faith. Left to their own devices, they may stray. Some will eventually return to the faith but only after receiving numerous scars and deformities. They need loving gardeners.
“Train
up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from
it.” Proverbs 22:6
Children learn values by watching their parents. There is a phrase, "Show, don't tell." Explain rules, do not just impose them. One thing which I taught my son and my grandchildren: "Don't be afraid, just be smart." Love unconditionally and predictably. Do not "smother" your children's individuality. Your children do not need or want to be little clones of you.
This is ancient knowledge known by the Jews long before
there were any Christians. Christians
often fail to remember our Jewish origins. In its strictest sense, “Torah”
means the first five books of the Bible.
The word “Torah” תּוֹרָה
translates as “teaching, or “instruction.” Read this web page written by the Chabad-Lubavitcher Rabbi Eliezer Shemtov of
Montevideo, Uruguay. Though I would
interpret this in a Christian context, I agree with every word spoken here by
the rabbi.

Unusual Christian Places: The Statue of the Bodhisattva Guanyin in Macau
This statue in Macau is of the Buddhist “Mercy Goddess,”
Guanyin. Not actually a
goddess, she is a bodhisattva, one who has attained enlightenment but has vowed
to seek the enlightenment of all sentient beings. Many also associate this bodhisattva with the Virgin Mary.
??? The answer lies in the history
of Macau and the resultant mixing of cultures and religions.
Jorge Alvares landed in China in 1513, and by 1535 trade
between Portugal and China was established. The site of Macau eventually became a Portuguese
colony, administered to various degrees by Portugal from 1557 to 1999, when the
rental agreement with China expired.
During this period, Roman Catholicism became a strong presence in the
area, which also includes followers of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and
smaller native faiths.
Guanyin (short for Guanshiyin, “Observing the Cries of the
World”) is an immortal bodhisattva, She is rarely represented as male. She has vowed to never rest until she
has freed all sentient beings from the cycle of reincarnation. Because of her infinite compassion, she
is sometimes depicted as holding a child.
There are several streams of Buddhism, some being very
strict, austere, and individually oriented. The less strict version, Mahayana (”Greater Vehicle”)
encourages everyone to become a bodhisattva (“enlightenment being”) and to work
for the eventual enlightenment of every sentient being in the universe by the
idea of “merit transference.” The
idea is that “merit” earned by the enlightened bodhisattva can be transferred
to less advanced beings to aid in their advancement. This Mahayana Buddhist doctrine may possibly have developed
in response to contact with
Christianity.
During the Edo
(Tokugawa Shogunate) Period (1603-1867) in Japan, Christianity was totally
banned and was declared to be punishable by death. Christians were forced to go
“underground.” Many venerated
Jesus and the Virgin Mary by disguising them as statues of Kannon (another name
for Guanyin) holding a child.
Statues such as this are known as Maria Kannon. There was often a cross hidden in an
inconspicuous location on the statue. Note the similarities of the face in the image
in the following link with the face of Guanyin on the statue in Macau.

Child in a Hot Car
It happens several times every year. A screaming mother or guardian, a dead child in a hot automobile. Never intending to harm the child, the adult has become distracted, rushing around, and has forgotten that the child is locked in the automobile, windows up, in the hot sun.
In the closed system of the locked car, the internal temperature in the passenger cabin can rapidly soar to 120 - 130 F ( ). The child dies of a heat stroke. The adult, of course, feels massive guilt and may, in some jurisdictions, face criminal charges.
People are incredulous that anyone could forget that they had left their child in a hot car. Some make very harsh and unkind statements and a few predictably, become “holy” and "forgiving." They may say that no one knows what pressures the mother was feeling, no one knows what was on her mind, no one was “walking in her shoes.” Then they misapply Scripture. “Judge not that you be not judged.”

The people who call for "understanding" do have a point. No normal person would intentionally harm their own child. There are extenuating circumstances and pressures on people which can cause them to exhibit "tunnel vision," seeing only the thing directly in front of them and forgetting other, more important, responsibilities. The thing we must remember, however, is that we still bear individual personal responsibility for our actions.
Just as it is imperative for Christians to keep their eyes on God, it is also crucial for us to keep our eyes on our children (and also our elderly and others who may not be able to care for themselves). We have been told that if anything distracts us from God, we should cut it out of our lives. This is also a good principle for us to follow concerning those under our care.

Stirring Up a Hornet’s Nest
Read about the Ariel Castro kidnapping case in these links.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57583620/michelle-knight-told-cops-ariel-castro-threatened-to-kill-her-if-amanda-berrys-baby-died/

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Justice/2013/0510/Could-Ariel-Castro-be-tried-for-murder-Case-would-be-unprecedented
The prosecutor in this horrible case is about to stir up a
hornet’s nest. Ariel Castro stands
accused of kidnapping three women and holding them against their wills for ten
years. He repeatedly raped and
sexually abused all three, impregnating two of them. One of the women was impregnated five times. Castro ended each of the five
pregnancies by starving and beating the woman. One child, now six years old, was born to another of the
hostages.
Abortion and the question of when a fetus officially becomes
human are sharply divisive issues in the United States at this time. There are already arguments beginning
over whether Castro’s termination of the pregnancies constituted feticide or
homicide. If the killings are
declared to have been homicides, then Castro is eligible for the death penalty. But, if the killings are declared to
have been homicides, then the fetuses will have been declared to have been
human. Obviously, for supporters
of abortion rights, this just will not be acceptable.
This places the abortion supporters into a tight spot. Virtually everyone is agreed that
Castro’s crimes against the three women (they were still legally children when
he abducted them) are heinous and evil.
Abortion supporters may be forced into a corner where they have to
downplay the seriousness of some of Castro’s crimes. It is a corner of their own making.
This is, of course, a religious issue, but I believe that an
atheist could come to the same conclusion that I have: the killings of the
fetuses were murders.

They Know What You Are Saying!
I was walking my dog when a neighbor came by with her two young boys on a walk. The two year old was driving his tricycle. The other boy has just turned one year old. The mother was pushing him in a little car. The youngest boy waved at me and then turned to his mother and bumped his hands together. He was telling his mother that he wanted "more," presumably more of his "car ride." The sign can be seen in the fourth link listed below.
The mother told me that the youngest boy knew several signs for simple things like "more," "finished," "hungry," "sleepy," "love," and "play." I had heard of this before and told her what that meant. The child, in correctly using the sign language, was demonstrating that he understood. This also meant that he understood what his parents were saying and that he was listening. I told her what she already knew; that children understand and are able to communicate long before they are able to speak.
Many people talk, and even argue, in front of "the baby," never realizing that the baby is listening. How wonderful it is if what the baby hears is talk of Jesus and what the baby sees is two righteous and loving parents.
The baby sign language is inspired by the American Sign Language for the Deaf.
