A pastor in the State of Louisiana (USA) is defying his state's Coronavirus social distancing guidelines and holding Sunday church services attended by as many as a thousand people. The church is even bussing in people from other parishes. He says asking churches to close down while essential businesses like grocery stores may remain open is offensive. I think he is offended to be told that church services are not essential gatherings. I think he is totally missing the point. This is not persecution of the church, it is a major health crisis and he is probably endangering members of his flock by having them gather together in such large groups.
I am not going to trash the man because I believe he is sincere. I just think he is wrong. Knowing what Jesus and Paul said on the subject I believe that the proper understanding is this: we are to respect and cooperate with the government even if we do not personally approve of the government. All leaders are in place only by the permission of God. Their duties are two-fold: to protect the people and to punish the evildoers. I believe that in the current pandemic situation the world's leaders are being forced to perform the first function.
There are ways for us to get around the forced separation under which we are currently living. This Sunday morning, the Sunday School class I attend met and discussed Acts 9 even though we were all in our own homes. We used the Zoom app.
Let me say that I have no connection to the Zoom company and receive no financial compensation from them. What we used was the basic (and free) software which allows up to 100 people to become a video group for 40 minute session. Everyone can see everyone else and everyone can hear each other talk. The company has other software for sale which can accommodate longer sessions and up to 1000 people. The software only costs about $20.00 per month, which most churches should be able to afford. Where the Church is gathered, the Spirit is there. The Bible does not say the Church must be gathered in the same room or even the same building.
This situation may even be an opportunity once the pandemic is resolved. If a member, or several members of a class, are physically unable to attend class meetings, they may still be included by using the application.
Zoom is just one of the companies offering services like this.

Joy
Our Sunday School class lesson was recently about Joy, not the gleeful emotion, but the Joy which can, and should,be experienced by Christians even in times of severe persecution.
This is the joy expressed by Paul and Silas singing in prison after they were beaten and chained to a damp stone wall. The joy with which Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stepped into the oven, The joy of Daniel in the lion's den. The joy of Job after his children were killed and everything he owned was stripped away. The joy which can best be described as peace or calmness.
Our class discussed exactly what the Christian Joy is. The best answer: the Christian Joy is the absolute knowledge that our God is in total control. He cannot be surprised or thwarted and those who belong to Him cannot be removed from Him. He is Love and works everything out for our good. Our good is to become conformed to Him.

Proud of a Job Well Done
I recently saw a waste
management truck which had the following phrase proudly painted on each side of
the truck in large letters, “We’re number one in the number two business!”
This waste management company
specializes in emptying and cleaning septic tanks. For those who might not
know, in some quarters of the United States, “number one” is a slang phrase for
urination while “number two” is slang for defecation. In the phrase painted on
the truck, the company is claiming to be “number one” at what they do. (A different use of the phrase, “number
one,” in this case meaning “the best.”)
What does this have to do with
this Christian blog? Well, these people are very proud that they do an
excellent job in this necessary occupation which is considered to be nasty and
unpleasant by most people. Other people may not understand but they can be glad
that someone does the job and does it well and proudly.
This is analogous to the Body
of Christ. Not everyone is in a glamorous or respected position but everyone is
necessary for the proper function of the Body of Christ.
“For
the body is not one member, but many. If the foot says, “Because I am not a
hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason [a]any
the less a part of the body. And if the ear says, “Because I am not an
eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason [b]any
the less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would
the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He
desired. If they were all one member, where would the body be? But now there
are many members, but one body.” 1 Corinthians 12:14-20 (NASB: New American
Standard Bible)
Not everyone is suited to be a medical
missionary in a hot steamy mosquito-infested jungle. Those who are called are
glad to do it.
Not everyone is suited to be a
missionary among violent urban gang members. Those who are called are glad to
do it.
Not everyone is suited to teach a
kindergarten Sunday School class every Sunday morning for forty-three years.
Those who are called are glad to do it.
The French Roman Catholic Nicholas
Herman (1605-1691) is better known as Brother Lawrence. Though he shunned
public life and lived as a lay brother in a monastery, he became known
worldwide for his piety and his “practice of the presence of the Lord.” He
cooked food and washed the monk’s dishes for God. When he became too feeble to
run a kitchen, he repaired the monk’s shoes for God. Everything he did he did
for “… God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which
it is performed.”
"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31

Praying for God
"A little girl was asked to pray in Sunday School. "Dear Lord," she said, "please take care of my daddy and my mommy and my brother and my doggy and me. And please take care of Yourself, too, Lord. If anything happens to You, we'll be in big trouble."

Magic For Jesus

This is magic (sleight of hand) not Magick or Sorcery. It is not supernatural but is based on
making you think you see something which you do not see.
Magic for Jesus is a ministry to Sunday Schools and youth
groups presenting visual lessons about biblical truths. Many people, children especially, are
visually oriented and will understand a point if it is in the form of a story,
or, in this case, a magic trick.
Jesus used this approach in his parables. The Kingdom of God is like …”
Magic for Jesus is non-denominational and from their short
statement of faith, appear to be doctrinally orthodox. They state that “We believe kids are
the church too; not the future church.
They are the church right now.”
.................................................................
One commenter was concerned that sleight of hand is based on deception and, therefore, could be viewed as dishonest. I would say that this is a needless concern. Magic for Jesus never tells children that the magic is real. The tricks are used to make spiritual truths understandable.
.................................................................
Magick and Sorcery are a different thing entirely. They are ceremonial magic based on occult concepts and amount to attempts to influence events and people by the use of rituals, ceremonies, and secret or hidden knowledge. Some claim that Magick and Sorcery may be White (good or benign) or Black (evil or malignant). The Christian view is that all magic which attempts to influence people or the world is based on man's rebellion against God.
.................................................................
A magic trick which looks stunningly real, but it is not. The magician offers to sell you the information on how to perform the trick.

Chocolate Chip Cookies
“It was snack time at Sunday School and the teacher was getting ready to
hand out giant chocolate chip cookies.
Two young brothers began to argue over who would get the first
cookie. The teacher saw an
opportunity for a moral lesson: “If Jesus were here, He would say ‘Let my
brother have the first cookie. I
can wait.’”
The older boy turned to his brother and said, ‘You be Jesus.’”

Earliest Easter Memories
This morning our Sunday School teacher asked each one of us to tell the class about our earliest memories of Easter. I made the class laugh.
My earliest memory of Easter is from when I was about four or five years old. My parents got us ready and carried us to the 5 AM Easter Sunrise Service on top of Red Mountain . I remember being angry because I was going to miss the 6 AM broadcast of the Gumby television series.
Gumby Episode #28, "Melon Felons" is below.
