Film Comment: Kike Like Me

The title of this film is a play on the  name of John Griffin’s 1964 book, Black Like Me.  Griffin darkened his skin so he could convincingly live for a time as a black man and then wrote of his experiences.

“Kike” is an ethnic slur word used to insult Jews. There are several possible explanations for the origin of the word, but one of the most likely is offered by Leo Rosten in his 1968 book, The Joys of Yiddish.

Rosten says that many of the Jews entering the United States at the immigration center at Ellis Island in New York were illiterate. A common practice at the time was for the recording clerk to write the persons name and then for the illiterate person to place “his mark,” an X, between the personal name and the surname.

Many Jews thought the X looked like a cross and refused to use it. Instead they wrote an O, a circle, which in Yiddish is “kikel” or “keikl.”

Kike Like Me (2007) is narrated by Jamie Kastner who presents the film as an examination of what it means to be Jewish in the modern world. Kastner travels to Jerusalem, Berlin, Poland, Paris, and the Auschwitz death camp. He becomes increasingly shocked and sarcastic as he sees more. He is disgusted to find that Auschwitz has a tourist souvenir shop.

Christians often forget that all of the first Christians were Jewish and that it is impossible to understand Christianity without understanding its Jewish origins. What does it mean to be perceived as Jewish? Watch this film if you dare.

What They Think of Us: Unblack Metal

Advisory: There may be profane and/or disturbing content in this post.

http://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=64176

“The whole purpose of black metal was to create the most dirty, unclean, antichristian sound possible. The spirit behind black metal will always be antichristian. That's where the sound comes from. You can't have good and evil mixed together and it be Christian” Death Raizer  (Note: Many black metal musicians draw a distinction between black metal music and satanism.)

Unblack metal is music which sounds identical to black metal but which has lyrics and content which promotes Christianity.

2008, the Polish Christian Unblack musician Fire (Jarek), comments: "God created music and satan distorted it.  I want to bring people to know Christ through music that they enjoy.  My lyrics are always either from the Bible or inspired by my life testimony and experiences.  ... he delivered me from drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and black magic!  We serve an awesome God."

My personal take on this: Unblack metal music is certainly on the far extreme fringes of Christianity.  I believe that the Christian musicians who produce it are sincere in their intent and that God knows men's (and women's) hearts.

Do the form and origins of this type of art make it inherently evil?  Is Christian country music acceptable?  Is Christian rap music acceptable?

A few years ago there was a woman named Kellie Everts who claimed to be a "stripper for Christ."  Could there be Christian pornography?  Where is the line?

Film Comment: Ashes and Diamonds

Ashes and Diamonds (1958) is a black and white Polish film about a Resistance fighter who is ordered to kill a Communist leader on the last day of World War II.  Maciek, portrayed by Zbigniew Cybulski (the "Polish James Dean") is a casual assassin who makes the mistake of meeting a woman and falling in love.  He has to choose between abandoning his assignment and possibly living a happy life with the woman, or fulfilling his "duty" whatever the cost.  He chooses to kill his target and ends up dying in hail of bullets in a garbage dump.

There are numerous religious images in the film, the most prominent is a damaged statue of Christ hanging upside down in a destroyed chapel.  The film itself is more political than religious.

The entire film seems to point to the fact of Maciek's impending self-destruction, as if he has no choice. Many people think they have no choice, that "this is just the way I am."  They place their lives and their souls on the garbage dump and, yet, they could have made other choices.

Maciek would have been scorned as a traitor had he failed to carry out his mission but he could have chosen no to do it.  Unbelievers who make a choice for Christ may find that their lives are greatly complicated by their decision.  God never promised anyone an uncomplicated life, but He did say that He would provide strength so that the believer could bear it.

"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."  1 Corinthians 10:13

The Extent of God's Love

“If I could only love the most righteous person in the world as much as the Creator loves the most wicked person in the world.”  Rabbi Zusha of Hanipol

Meshulam Zusha (1718-1800) was born in Galicia and would, in modern terms, have been of the Polish nationality.  He was known for his extreme piety and his highly emotional prayer life.   He is considered to have been one of the great Hassidic rabbis along with his equally revered brother, Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk.

Many people understand that Jesus died for the sins of the world.  What they often fail to realize is that Jesus died for them individually.  The Bible says that the angels rejoice when one sinner believes.   The price paid for that one sinner was the most valuable thing in the universe.

Christians

At some time during their lives, the following people have publicly identified themselves as Christian.   Inclusion in this list does not indicate approval or disapproval of the person, of their orthodoxy or lack of it, or of their actions.  Readers are encouraged to suggest persons who should be included on this list.  This is a recurring segment in this blog.

Sung Shang-Chieh: (b. 1901, China – d. 1944; aka: Song Shang-Jie; John Sung; Little Pastor) Evangelist, revivalist in China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. Over 100,000 converts. He worked with Watchman Nee. Wesleyan Methodist.

Pachomius: (b. ca 292, Egypt – d. 348; aka. Pakhom, Pachome, Pakhomius) Pachomius’ name in Coptic means “the falcon.”  He is considered to be the founder of Christian cenobitic monasticism.  After being involuntarily conscripted into the Roman army, he became a Christian and follower of the hermit, Palaemon.  Before Pachomius, Christian asceticism was solitary; he organized the hermits into communities.

Mary of Egypt: (b. ca. 344, Egypt – d. ca. 421; aka. Maria Aegyptica) Mary was not a prostitute but appears to have been a sexually promiscuous nymphomaniac from the age of twelve.  At age twenty-six, she underwent a religious conversion and became an ascetic.  She lived the rest of her life as a hermit in the desert near the Jordan River.

Lech Aleksander Kaczynski: (b. 1949, Poland – d. 2010) Anti-Communist President of the Republic of Poland.  He and his wife, Maria Kaczynska, died in an airplane crash in 2010. (Ninty-six people died in the crash.)

Spencer Perceval: (b. 1762 – d. 1812)  Perceval was an ardent opponent of the slave trade and served, from 1809, as the British Prime Minister until his assassination in 1812.
