"We like to worship outdoors by the seashore like Jesus did!" Pastor Larry Deitch.
Daytona Beach Drive In Christian Church in Florida is an open-air church in which everyone can simply drive up to the front of the church building and sit in their automobiles for the worship service. This means that worshippers can dress in any way they like.
The church is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and invites attendees to join them before and after the worship service for hot coffee and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. This is so very, very "southern"! In the American South, we are known for our hospitality and our love for food. The very thought of Krispy Kreme doughnuts sends many of us into a rhapsody!
Krispy Kremes are yeast-raised doughnuts traditionally glazed and served while still warm, usually accompanied by a cup of coffee. Some of the older restaurants had glass windows which let diners watch the automated production of the doughnuts from start to finish. Trays of the finished pastries were then immediately brought out for sale.

Non-Canonical Books Mentioned in the Bible: Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia
The Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia is a now lost secular Persian historical work mentioned three times in the book of Esther.
“And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.” Esther 2:23
“On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.” Esther 6:1
“And all the acts of his power and of his might, and the declaration of the greatness of Mordecai, whereunto the king advanced him, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?” Esther 10:2
Esther (the Persian name of the beautiful Jewish girl, Hadassah) was made the queen of King Xerxes I (Ahasuerus) who ruled Persia 486-465 BC/BCE. The Medes were ethnic Iranians who were important in the Persian government. They were descendants of the Median Empire (fl 726-549 BC/BCE).

What Americans Believe
"America's religion is broad but not deep. It's not that Americans don't believe anything. They believe everything." George Gallop Jr (1930-2011)
As relativism becomes more and more the prevailing world philosophy, religion becomes so "personal" that there are multitudes of individual religions with each person picking and choosing bits and pieces from here and there and declaring themselves to be "spiritual." If there is no absolute knowable truth, as the relativists insist, this is the ultimate result.

Bible Printer's Errors: The Cannibals Bible
Proofreading is very important. Sometimes one word changes the entire meaning of a passage. The following, from the 1682 King James version edition known to collectors as "The Cannibals Bible," is an example to prove the point.
WHAT IT SHOULD HAVE SAID:
WHAT IT SAID:
"And if the latter husband ate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;" Deuteronomy 24:3

Someone is Always Watching
“I grew up in Birmingham, Ala., a religious town. In my junior year of high school, something I had never expected started happening to my non-Jewish friends. They fell in love with their Christianity. They started reading the Bible. They would talk theology in the cafeteria. It was inspiring, and in a Jewish way, I began doing the same. I dusted off the Bible I had received as a bar mitzvah gift, and like my non-Jewish friends, read it cover to cover. The more engaged I became with my Judaism, the more I fell in love with it. By the time I was 17, I had set my sights on the rabbinate. In a way, my Southern Baptist friends turned me into a rabbi.” Rabbi Aaron Miller, assistant rabbi at Washington Hebrew Congregation, Washington, D.C. (USA)
“Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. “ Colossians 4:5
“Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.” 2 Corinthians 3:2-3
Someone is always watching you even if you do not know it. You are God's letter to them. What will they read in that letter?

Extra-Biblical Evidences of Biblical Persons and/or Events: Nehemiah's Wall
Since no archeological evidence had ever been found to corroborate it, archeologists over the years have tended to discount the historicity of the book of Nehemiah and its account of the repairs on the damaged wall of Jerusalem. That is, until 8 November 2007, when archeologist Eilat Mazar (b. 1956, Israel) announced that she had found it. Her discovery is now fully recognized as the correct interpretation. The wall fits the biblical description of the area and the site was dated by pottery found at the wall. Pottery? Yes, it would have been used to carry drinking water for the workers and possibly food. When a pot broke, the pieces were left where they fell. Pottery styles are different for different cultures and are often used in dating archeological sites.
"And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence. Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid, And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire? Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it." Nehemiah 2:1-5.
Artaxerxes gave Nehemiah letters of recommendation and building supplies, and appointed him as governor of Jerusalem.
נְחֶמְיָה
Nehemiah, the son of Hacaliah (Nehemiah 1:1) was a captive/slave of the Persian King Artaxerxes I (d. 424 BC/BCE). He served as the king's "cupbearer" and was sent by the king to be the governor of Jerusalem in 445 BC/BCE. Why would the king of Persia choose a minor, non-Persian slave to be his representative in a faraway country? Because Nehemiah asked him to.
Think about this. It was punishable by death to speak to, or even to approach, the king unless one was summoned. This is shown in the book of Esther, where the beautiful Jewish girl Hadassah was afraid to approach King Ahasuerus of Persia (aka. Xerxes I the Great; Khshayarsha, ruled 486-465 BC/BCE). She was afraid to speak to him even though she had been chosen as his new queen; she was his wife.
"All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days." Esther 4:11
No wonder that Nehemiah said, "Then I was very sore afraid," Of course, he was afraid. He was just a minor house servant, but he had to be a very well trusted servant. He was in a position where he could have poisoned the king's wine, and, in order to hand the king his cup of wine, Nehemiah would have been close enough to the king to successfully lunge at him with a concealed knife or with his bare hands.
Artaxerxes obviously trusted Nehemiah; it seems that he may have even liked Nehemiah.

Amazing Grace in Lakota

The Lakota tribe (aka: Dakota, Sioux) live primarily in the states of North and South Dakota in the United States of America. They number about 70,000, of whom about 25,000 speak Lakota, a dialect of Sioux; the rest speak English.
The most well-known Lakota from history are Sitting Bull, ca. 1831-1890 (Lakota name: Thatanka Iyotake) and Crazy Horse, ca. 1840-1877 (Lakota name: Thasunke Witko).

Hallelujah for These Children!
(Some videos will not play properly when you click on the triangle. Instead, click on the title line in the picture and the video will begin. When the video is completed, close the You Tube pop-up window to return to this blog.)
I had to post this wonderful video from the Kuinerrarmiut Elitnaurviat 5th Grade students in Quinhagak (Kuinerraq in the Yup'ik language), Alaska (USA). These are Yup'ik people (you probably would call them Eskimos, but they do not like that word). There are about 16,900 speakers of Yup'ik, which is as different from its sister language,Yupik, as Spanish is from French. The word Yup'ik comes from "yuk" = "person" plus "Pik" = "real."
Quinhagak is a fishing and canning village and had a permanent population of 555 as of the 2000 census. The name means "new river channel." The village has been proven to have existed since at least 1000 AD/CE.
These are poor but proud, hard-working people. From the video, it looks like almost the entire village helped in the production of this wonderful statement. I especially love the girls spinning at 2:04 and the very cold girl at 2:32.

The New Testament Church
"The primitive Church had no new Testament, no thought-out theology, no stereotyped traditions. The men who took Christianity to the Gentile world had no special training, only a great experience - in which "all maxims and philosophies were reduced to the simple task of walking in the light since the light had come." Burnett Hillman Streeter (1847-1937), British biblical scholar and textual critic, educator, educational administrator. He wrote on religious philosophy and comparative religion.

Amazing Grace
The largest portion of the lyrics of "Amazing Grace" were written by John Newton (1725-1807), a former slave trader. Before his conversion he was a disgraced Navy deserter and was known as an obscene, vulgar, profane, and violent man. In his lyrics, he meant what he said. (the lyrics of stanza six are from an unknown source.)
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

A Drum and Bagpipe Version of "Amazing Grace"
Click on the title line to start the video.
This is a very Scottish drum and
bagpipe version of “Amazing Grace.” This version, especially, stirred my Scottish roots. I am descended from the Grier family, a sept of Clan Gregor (Grier, from Grierson, which is from Gregorson, which is from MacGregor, which is from Clan Gregor and descends from the ancient Kings of the Picts and Dál Riata. The personal name is Griogar, a form of Gregory, which in Greek means “watchful.” “Mac” in Scottish means “son of.”). The MacGregors ran afoul of Clan Campbell and were outlawed for almost two hundred years. Bearing the name of MacGregor was punishable by death. The family still proudly exists. The current chief of Clan Gregor is Sir Malcolm Gregor Charles Mac Gregor of Mac Gregor, 7th BT, of Lanrick and Balquhidder, 24th Chief of Clan Gregor.
The song, "Amazing Grace," is very closely associated with Scotland.
For those who do not know: the “skirts” that the musicians are wearing are called kilts. The plaid designs (tartans) on the kilts are specific to and identify individual families (clans) and were the traditional everyday clothing, worn with great pride. There is a legend that during World War I, Germans on the battlefield called their kilted Scot adversaries “the ladies from Hell.” The last time that Scots wore kilts in battle was at Dunkirk in 1940.
